Our activity encompasses the entire process of generating new photonic biosensor devices, including fundamental research and theoretical design, nanofabrication, surface biofunctionalization, lab-on-a-chip integration, and their final validation in real scenarios. We have widely demonstrated our expertise in:

  • Surface Plasmon Resonance (SPR and LSPR) biosensors: design and development of portable devices with user-friendly operation and high performance.
  • Bimodal Waveguide (BiMW) biosensors: our pioneering design of interferometric nanophotonic system for ultrasensitive label-free analysis.
  • Sensor biofunctionalization: unique know-how on gold and silicon surface chemistry strategies for controlled and optimum bioreceptor immobilization, including proteins, antibodies, and oligonucleotides.
  • Biomedical applications: assay development and clinical validation for diagnostics and therapy monitoring of different diseases and disorders, including cancer, infections, celiac disease, allergies, etc. Our biosensors have been successfully applied for detection of proteins, antibodies, microRNA, pathogens (virus and bacteria), peptides, drugs, and also epigenetic biomarkers (alternative splicing, DNA methylation, etc.).
  • Environmental applications: assay development and validation for detection and monitoring of pollutants and contaminants in water, food, etc.

I have a B.Sc in Statistics from Tel-Aviv University in Israel and a PhD in Community Medicine from The University of Hong Kong. I have vast experience with injury coding and classification as well as injury and disaster epidemiology. I enjoy developing instruments, disseminating them and making them into a standard. One such tool was developed to facilitate practically oriented studies of community resilience: The Conjoint Community Resiliency Assessment Measure (CCRAM). Other such tools include the Barel body region by nature of injury matrix (used to better code multiple injury using ICD-9), and the recent Continuous Traumatic Stress Response (CTSR) Scale .

The high technological complexity of products and services is a feature of the health sector. Therefore, the relationship between the scientific base of universities and institutes and the pharmaceutical industry is a necessary condition for national technological advances in this segment. One strategy already adopted and consolidated by the countries that are at the cutting edge of technological development and that, from the advent of the Innovation Law - Law 10.973/2004 - has been increasingly embraced by Brazilian institutions and Fiocruz is one of the most prominent health institutions from Brazil immersed in the research innovation challenges.

Fiocruz produces, disseminates, and share knowledge and technologies and contributes to the promotion of health and quality of life of the population.  Besides the reduction of social inequalities and the national dynamics of innovation, with the defense of the right to health and full citizenship as central values, it uses science and innovation as the basis of socio-economic development and health promotion.

COVID 19, HIV-1, HIV-1 / 2, Chagas’ disease, dengue fever, leishmaniasis, leptospirosis, arboviruses, influenza, and many other diseases are under research at Instituto Oswaldo Cruz. Please take a look at the technological showcase in COVID 19, shared in the links to the research work window.
